扑克 Understand and Play the Poker Bluff Correctly

One of the first things you must understand about bluffing when playing poker is that you will not bluff somebody out of a hand by calling them down to the river.

If a player is betting, it should be obvious that they are probably holding some decent cards like a pocket pair or suited connectors.

It would be a costly mistake to assume otherwise. You are not going to intimidate a player with a good hand. They are not going to fold. So many online poker players don’t realize this one simple fact about bluffing. It is also very important to understand that poker bluffs at online poker sites work much better at higher levels. They are very ineffective at low limit tables.

Bluffing is to be utilized sparingly. Bluffing is something that many players use way too much when playing poker. Bluffing should be used like a trick play in football where it comes by surprise. Online poker players with a long-range outlook don't resort to bluffing as a regular part of their game, as weak players who watch too many movies and TV shows use bluffing too much. Sometimes players simply have to fold, and the best do, rather than risk good money on a poor bluff.

That is not to say that bluffing isn’t useful. It is. Sometimes you may want to bluff just to get caught doing it but you can’t be doing it very often. You want to do it on occasion though just so other online betting players don’t see you as a rock. Sometimes players will take a short-term loss on a terrible hand while planting the seed that a bluff is possible for later in the game.

One of the better times to bluff is after the flop if you are in late position. You can survey what the other players are doing and get a feel on whether or not anyone has a strong hand. This is the perfect time to pull off a bluff if no one is taking a shot at the pot. Another technique used by players is to bluff if they had raised the bet pre-flop, as raising pre-flop is an indicator of a strong poker hand. Players who are fairly certain that their opponents drew weak hands on the flop then bet the flop themselves. This is also called a continuation bet and is something many players do.

You want to remember that players who are up against conservative opponents on a nothing flop will also bluff, trying to steal the pot since the board looks weak. This is just another good example of a situation in which a bluff is worth a shot. There are good times to bluff when playing Texas Holdem but bluffing should be done sparingly and for good effect, not recklessly and just to look cool.
