扑克 Betting the Top Pair in Holdem

Usually betting the top pair in Texas Holdem poker is a good hand but definitely not a guaranteed winning hand.

When you play Texas Holdem you are very often going to see situations where top pair does not win and two pair, sets, straights and flushes will prevail.

How should you play top pair in Texas Holdem?  Let’s take a look at the very common situation in Texas Holdem, playing top pair. The first step to playing top pair in Texas Holdem is to bet aggressively.  You don’t want drawing hands in the pot with you.  If you are already in trouble after hitting top pair you will know it after your aggressive bet.  Your opponent will either call or re-raise your big wager.  You then would know that you are facing two pair or a set, or maybe a strong straight or flush draw.

The advantage to betting aggressively with top pair in Texas Holdem is that most of the time your bet will win the pot immediately. The same aggressive betting applies before the flop and after the flop.  If you have a pair of Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, 10’s, 9’s and even small pairs you want to be aggressive and drive out the crap hands that can draw out on you.  It is the same after the flop.

When you bet in Texas Hold’em you are doing it for two basic reasons.  You are betting because you have the best hand, or you are betting to find out where you are at.  Remember that betting is almost always better than calling in Texas Holdem poker because it puts pressure on your opponent instead of you.

When playing texas holdem, the top pair can be dangerous so remember that betting will usually give you a good indication of where you are at in a hand.  If you are in good shape in the hand a bet will probably win the pot right away.  If you trail in the hand a bet will probably tell you that you are in trouble.  Top pair is a good hand in Holdem but it is no guarantee of winning.

Bet aggressively with your top pair and win or lose your small pots in Texas Holdem.  You don’t want to get trapped into losing a big pot with only top pair.  That is a big key to remember when you have top pair.  It is a hand to win small pots with.  It is not a hand to be facing big raises and drawing hands.  That is the biggest thing to remember when you are playing top pair in Texas Holdem.
