扑克 Understanding the Importance of Poker Tells

Novice poker players usually ask, just how important is understanding your opponents tells in online poker?

Well to be honest, VERY IMPORTANT! First of all, a poker tell is something that you pick up about your opponent that gives you an indication about the strength of their poker hand.

Some obvious poker tells may be clicking the auto play button, betting aggressively, chatting, etc. You can obviously pick up certain tendencies and notice things that may help you analyze your opponent, but it does not guarantee you anything when playing poker. What you need to remember about poker tells is that they will always exist in poker but they won’t always tell you what you want to know.

It is just as important, perhaps more important, to be able to analyze the hand as it plays out, and to analyze your opponent’s hand.  If you can pick up the other player’s betting patterns you are actually much better off than relying upon what you think is a so-called tell.

Most of the professional players make their decisions based on the betting patterns, not tells.  A lot of pros will go out of their way to let you know that they can spot tells but it is not the most important part of the game.  What happens for instance, when a player uses a tell to trick you?  It happens.  A player may deliberately do something to set you up for later.

Most of the good players know exactly what they are going to do within a few seconds of seeing a card.  They only take extra time to show a deliberate action to make other people at the table think something different than what they want them to.  Some poker players may already have made up their mind they are going to fold a hand, yet take a long while to make the decision.  They might want to make the opponent to at least think a little bit more.

Don’t get too excited about poker tells. You need to focus on your own play, other people’s betting patterns, and the flow of the game.  Some people get so obsessed with other peoples tells that they forget about their own game.  Don’t make that big mistake.  And remember that you don’t want to have any tells of your own.  You want to keep still when playing at a local poker room, go through the same routine, and act calm no matter what.

The best thing you can do when playing poker is not to give your opponent any extra information.  In online poker, that means betting the same amount with strong or weak hands. The bottom line for tells is, don’t give your opponent any, and at least be aware of any tells your opponents might have.
