When you play online poker, one skill that will really help you win lots of money is the ability to read your opponents hands. When it comes to playing poker, always remember that there are many types of players.



You will usually find a beginner, weekend player, semi-pro and the pro at any poker table. You can often tell what type of player you are by your ability to read opponent’s poker hands.



In online poker you will probably be playing Texas Holdem so reading your opponent's hand is very important. What you will often see in the progression of a poker player is three-fold. You will see in the beginning where the player looks at his own hand and the board. The next stage is when the player sees his own hand, the board, and tries to put his opponent on a hand.



The third stage is where the player sees his own hand, his opponent's hand, and what his opponent thinks he has. Most players are in the first category. All they can get past is seeing their own hand and the board. Once in a while they will think about what their opponent might have, but it is not frequent enough.



As you look to improve you casino poker playing you really need to learn how to read your opponent's hands. Here is where you start. Ask yourself these things. What position is your opponent in? Did he raise or call before the flop? Why did he raise? What cards do you think he has? Do you think his pot odds make it worth a call for him? How do you think he will react if you raise?  These are some of the questions you should ask yourself.



The problem for poker players is that all of these questions have to be answered in just a matter of a few seconds. You actually can ask yourself a lot of these questions as you play the hand, but putting your opponent on a poker hand is like putting together a puzzle. You go with as many pieces as you can find and try to put it all together. Sometimes you will be right and sometimes you won't. The more you practice reading hands the better you will get.



Start your practice the next time you are playing poker at a land-based or online casino. You can't get enough practice reading hands. It can be done every single time you sit down at the table. The more you practice the better you will get. You will find that as you become more adept at reading hands that you start playing better poker and making more money.
